Mr Fernández' solid academic economics background, as well as his many years’ experience and connections with the Mexican public policy arena is coupled with external board directorships of leading businesses across a number of sectors to provide the Board with commercial input and the macroeconomic perspective. Mr Fernández holds a bachelor of economics from ITAM as well as a PhD in economics from the University of Chicago. He has previously served as head of the tax policy office at the Mexican Ministry of Finance and as head of the economic deregulation office at the Mexican Ministry of Trade. Mr Fernández has been the rector of ITAM, an independent not-for-profit higher education institution for 20 years.
