Peñoles first acquired an interest in the district with its acquisition of 60 per cent. of Compañía Fresnillo, in 1961. In 1996, Peñoles acquired the remaining 40 per cent. of Compañía Fresnillo, bringing the Fresnillo mine into Peñoles' sole ownership.

The San Carlos vein, which is the main source of current production, was discovered in 1997 as part of the ongoing exploration programme at Fresnillo.

In 2004, investment in the processing facilities led to an increase in production capacity from 4,500 to 7,000 tonnes per day.

Peñoles has acquired mining rights over a further approximately 130,000 hectares in the Fresnillo district. This figure includes mining rights held through the Fresnillo Group's Juanicipio joint venture with MAG Silver. Significant investment has recently been made in delineating the Saucito, Jarillas and Valdecanas deposits at Fresnillo II located within these mining claims.
